Franklin D. Roosevelt TLS to Jesse Straus 2 Months Ahead of First Inauguration re: "…the serious problems that lie ahead"
TLS
A typed letter from then-Governor Franklin Roosevelt to friend and political ally Jesse Straus. 1p on "Executive Mansion" stationary, 8.5" x 11", Albany, New York, December 7, 1932. Signed at conclusion as "Franklin D. Roosevelt", he notably thanks Mr. Straus for his service and friendship, mentioning "the serious problems that lie ahead." Very good condition with degrees of light age toning, creasing, and minor wear at folds, including a small closed tear along the right edge. Boldy signed just two months before assuming the presidency.

In full:

"I am sorry that your letter didn't come to light until today. If you could see the avalanche of mail that has poured in you would understand why.
I am not going to attempt to say 'thank you' to you. Friendship and service such as yours cannot be measured.
I shall get in touch with you with you through Percy if any question arises which you might investigate while abroad. It means much to know that I can count on his cooperation as well as yours in coping with the serious problems that lie ahead.
I hope to see you soon after your return. In the meantime cordial regards to you."

Jesse Isidor Straus (1872-1936) served as the American ambassador to France from 1933 to 1936. He was the son of Isidor Straus and Ida Straus, both of whom died in the sinking of the RMS Titanic. A known political ally of Roosevelt during his time as Governor, Straus notably funded a 1931 poll of delegates to the 1928 Democratic Convention in order to assess the former's chances of receiving the 1932 presidential nomination.
