Roosevelt Franklin

Franklin D. Roosevelt TLS to Episcopal Bishop following 1930 gubernatorial reelection

1p TLS on fancy letterhead signed by recently reelected Governor of New York Franklin Delano Roosevelt (1882-1945) as "Franklin D. Roosevelt" at bottom right. The gilt and embossed state seal appears at top labeled "State of New York, Executive Chamber, Albany," and "Franklin D. Roosevelt, Governor" is printed at left. The "R" of Roosevelt is slightly smeared, otherwise the signature is fine and dark. The thick cream paper is in very good condition to near fine condition. With expected paper folds and overall light toning. Page measures 8" x 10.5".

44th Governor of New York Franklin D. Roosevelt wrote this thank you note to Episcopal Bishop of New York William T. Manning (1866-1949) on November 13, 1930.

"Dear Bishop Manning:

I am deeply grateful to you for your telegram of congratulations. It was good of you to think of me and I appreciate it.

Very sincerely yours,

Franklin D. Roosevelt."

Less than two weeks earlier on November 4, 1930, Democratic Party candidate and incumbent Governor Roosevelt handily won reelection by a margin of 14% of the popular vote. Roosevelt had begun campaigning for reelection in May 1930. His progressive policies offering social assistance to struggling New Yorkers following the 1929 Stock Market crash were very popular. Governor Roosevelt's advocacy of old-age pensions, unemployment insurance, and farm relief would become even more relevant as the Great Depression continued.

William T. Manning served as the 10th Episcopal Bishop of New York between 1921-1946. Roosevelt had been baptized an Episcopalian in Hyde Park, New York and had attended Groton School, an Episcopalian men's preparatory school in northeastern Massachusetts. He occasionally attended Episcopalian church services in Washington, D.C. during his presidency.

Roosevelt's gubernatorial experience in New York prepared him well for the presidency; he would win the Democratic Party presidential nomination in July 1932 on a similar platform. His unprecedented twelve-year-long presidential term began a year later, in March 1933.
