Description:

Villa Pancho

Single page TLS, 8.5" x 6.75", on General En Jefe letterhead. Dated "Diciembre 18 de 1913" and boldly signed by Francisco Villa as "Francisco Villa".  Accompanied by a cachet envelope with Francisco Villa's name, Liberty holding sword and scales, and the name of the small locale of Canutillo, Durango at left; and a contemporary B&W news photo of "Gral Francisco Villa", with slight curling and a 1' intact tear along top edge. Letter with professional repairs to verso to support separations along fold lines.

Villa was a brilliant tactician on the battle field, which translated to political support. In 1913, local military commanders elected him provisional governor of the state of Chihuahua He was one of the most prominent figures of the Mexican Revolution; Commander of the División del Norte in the Constitutionalist Army, helped oust President Victoriano Huerta, allied with Zapata against Carranza; raided the U.S.-Mexico border forcing an unsuccessful nine-month US incursion under General Pershing.

Villa's war tactics were studied by the United States Army and then oddly enough a contract with Hollywood was made whereby Hollywood would be allowed to film Villa's movements and 50% of Hollywood's profit would be paid to Villa to support the Revolution.

A great piece of history from a period of high transitional conflict in Mexico.
