Francis A. Pratt and business partner Amos Whitney (1832-1920) co-founded Pratt & Whitney, a machine manufacturing concern, in Hartford, Connecticut in 1860. Pratt, who was a brilliant mechanical engineer and machine parts designer, invented and patented several tools that revolutionized the textile, arms, and other industries. Pratt retired from his eponymous firm in 1898, just one year before writing this condolence note to an unknown business associate.

In 1899, Pratt & Whitney had four regional American offices in addition to its Hartford, Connecticut corporate headquarters. Now part of the United Technologies Corporation, P & W is still in operation today and employs over 39,000 employees around the world. Pratt & Whitney moved its focus to aviation and aerospace during the twentieth century. The company still dominates this arena, manufacturing an estimated 25% of all commercial passenger aircraft engines worldwide.
