Four Volumes of Special General Orders For the Years 1872-73, 1875 & 1880, Incl. References to Custer & 7th Cavalry
Multivolume

Four bound volumes consisting of over 1,200 special orders from the War Department Adjutant General's Office, issued during the years 1872, 1873, 1875, and 1880. Washington, D.C.: Government Printing Office. Of note is Special Orders No. 155 issued on July 31, 1873 which reimburses Lt. Gen. George Custer for expenses paid in telegraphic dispatches, and Special Orders No. 70 recording his extended leave, dated December 13, 1875. Also highlighted within are approximately 15 orders signed by adjutant general Edward D. Townsend, in addition to 48 others signed by various Colonels/Aide-de-Camps. Scattered notations can be found throughout, with varying degrees of toning and flattened folds within. Covers have expected wear from use, with rubbing and bumping to the corners. Evident creasing and cracking to spines. Overall, very good.

Edward Davis Townsend (1817-1893) was an American military officer who was Adjutant General of the United States Army from 1869 to 1880. After graduating from West Point in 1837, he was commissioned a lieutenant in the 2nd U.S. Artillery, participating in the Second Seminole War and subsequent relocation of the Cherokee Nation. Townsend later served on the Pacific coast from 1851 to 1856, after which he returned to Washington for the remainder of his career.
