Heyward was an American Founding Father, lawyer, jurist, and politician who served as a member of the Continental Congress representing South Carolina, becoming a signatory of both the Declaration of Independence and Articles of Confederation. Upon his return to South Carolina in 1778, he began his lengthy tenure as a judge, eventually retiring from the bench in 1798. During the Revolutionary War, Heyward was notably taken as a British prisoner during the siege of Charleston, where the confiscation of over 100 slaves led to his being proclaimed "a martyr of the revolution."
