Former Secretary of Defense Cyrus R. Vance 10 Item Archive- Superb Content!

A group of ten documents including (9) TLS and (1) ANS from former Deputy Secretary of Defense Cyrus Vance, all except one addressed to lieutenant general Dewitt C. Smith. Ranging in dates between March 7, 1967 and December 18, 1984, the majority are signed "Cy" with the variation of "Cy Vance" and "Cyrus Vance" to some. Correspondence includes discussions of Vance's dealings with the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, military personnel of the U.S. War College, and Vance's opinions on checks and balances. Varying conditions, with expected letter folds, minor creasing, and paper toning throughout. Overall, condition is very fine. Please refer to accompanying photos for further information.

An excerpt from his 1984 letter reads in part:
"…I agree wholeheartedly with your views on the need to gain the support of the broad center in formulating American foreign policy. As long as we do not stray to the extreme right or left, we will be able to retain the support of our citizenry, as well as that of our allies. If we fail to do so, we will lose the support of both these groups, as well as confuse and confound our potential adversaries. I am looking forward to testifying before the Senate Foreign Relations Committee next year and will under-score this point in those hearings…"

Cyrus Robert Vance Sr. (1917-2002) was an American lawyer and United States Secretary of State under President Jimmy Carter from 1977 to 1980. Prior to serving this position, he was the United States Deputy Secretary of Defense of the Johnson administration, and additionally, during the Kennedy administration, he was Secretary of the Army and General Counsel of the Department of Defense.

Dewitt C. Smith (1920-2005) was a United States Army lieutenant general who served as the Deputy Chief of Staff for Personnel from 1977 to 1978. He was also the longest-serving commandant of the U.S. Army War College, serving from 1974 to 1977 and again from 1978 to 1980.

All items will ship with signature required, and full insurance. Most items are sent via Federal Express, with P. O. Box addresses being sent through USPS. We insure through Berkley Asset Protection with rates of $.70 per $100 of value, among the lowest insurance rates in the industry. Our shipping department cameras document every package, both outgoing and incoming, for maximum security. In addition, we compare our shipping and handling rates against those of other auction houses, to ensure that our charges are among the lowest in the trade.

Upon winning your item(s), you will receive an invoice with our in-house shipping and handling fees included. ***We will ship to the address as it appears on your invoice. If any changes to the shipping address need to be made, you must inform us immediately.***

International shipments: In order to comply with our insurance provider, all international shipments will be sent via Fed Ex and customs paperwork will show a value of $1.00. International buyers should contact our office directly with any questions regarding this policy.
