Flown Apollo 9 Landmark Maps & Photos Folder Covers, Signed and Authenticated by Commander Jim McDivitt - Fantastic!
DS

One of a kind original paper covers that protected the set of "Landmark Maps and Photographs" checklist flown on the Apollo 9 mission, signed by Commander James A. McDivitt. The covers measure 8.5" x 10" and are accompanied by one of the original metal rings which held the documents together. Marked on the front cover: "Part No. SKB 32100026-301, S/N 1005," and signed on the back cover by McDivitt in green ink: "Flown on Apollo 9 / Jim McDivitt / Apollo 9 CDR." Light soiling as expected; overall in very good condition. From the collection of James A. McDivitt, with a COA confirming that the covers were personally owned by him. Also accompanied by a COA from noted Space experts, The Space Collective, with an official holograph at lower left and archive number at lower right.

These covers protected a checklist which was the only one of its kind carried on the flight and, according to McDivitt's letter of authentication, was used by the crew for Earth landmark tracking during the mission's 10 days in space. The landmark and photo map plates protected by these covers were intended for an emergency procedure in which the Apollo astronauts could update the spacecraft guidance and navigation computers by inputting precise position information of preselected Earth landmarks.

Apollo 9 was the third human spaceflight in NASA's Apollo program. Flown in low Earth orbit, it was the second crewed Apollo mission that the United States launched via a Saturn V rocket, and was the first flight of the full Apollo spacecraft: the command and service module (CSM) with the Lunar Module (LM).

James Alton McDivitt (1929-2022) was an American test pilot, United States Air Force (USAF) pilot, aeronautical engineer, and NASA astronaut in the Gemini and Apollo programs. He was selected to join NASA as part of Astronaut Group 2 in 1962, and he commanded the Gemini 4 mission, during which Ed White performed the first U.S. spacewalk. McDivitt later commanded the Apollo 9 flight, which was the first crewed flight test of the Apollo Lunar Module.
