[PENNSYLVANIA.] Archive of 5 Surveys, ca. 1793-1801, Cumberland County, Pennsylvania. 5 pp. total.

This small archive of drafts (or "draughts") of surveys for central and western Pennsylvania illustrates the complications of accurately surveying the property amount of land to purchasers or other recipients. These copies were created between 1771 and 1803 but generally involve surveys done in the 1760s for pioneer settlers within the original extent of Cumberland County, Pennsylvania.

- Samuel Clendenin, Copy, August 1, 1803, Lancaster, Pennsylvania, of Richard Tea, Survey of Land to William Jones along Little Aughwick Creek, Cumberland County, Pennsylvania, July 29, 1762. 1 p., 7.5" x 12.25". Embossed wax and paper seal present and intact; rodent damage to upper right corner; toning.
In 1762, Cumberland County encompassed most of the southwestern quarter of Pennsylvania and beyond, including the area of Little Aughwick Creek, which is in modern Fulton County.

- Surveys to John Fleming and Richard Hope, ca. 1793. 1 p., 8" x 11.5". Rodent damage to upper right corner; toning; light staining.

- Surveys to George Croghan and John Harris, n.d. [Cumberland County, Pennsylvania]. 1 p., 8.25" x 13". Rodent damage to upper right corner; toning.
George Croghan (d. 1782) was born in Ireland and became a fur trader in the Pennsylvania backcountry in 1741. His success in trading with western Indians led him to become a negotiator between them and the province of Pennsylvania.

- John Lukens, Copy, January 18, 1771, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, of William Lyon for John Armstrong, Survey for Richard Peters, November 10, 1761, Middleton Township, Cumberland County, Pennsylvania. 1 p., 8" x 13". Rodent damage to upper right corner; separation on some folds; embossed paper and wax seal intact; staining.
"A Draught of a Tract of Land Situate in Middleton Township in Cumberland County Containing Three hundred and ninety eight Acres and one hundred and thirty two perches with the usual allowance of Six ?Cent for Roads; Resurveyed for Richard Peters Esqr the 10th day of November 1761."
John Lukens (ca. 1720-1789) served as Surveyor General of Pennsylvania and Delaware (1761-1776) and of Pennsylvania (1781-1789). In 1762, he helped to survey the northern boundary of Delaware.

- David Kennedy, Copy, July 25, 1794, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, of Meeting of Surveyor General Daniel Brodhead, Receiver General Francis Johnston, Secretary David Kennedy, and Master of the Rolls Matthew Irwin of the Pennsylvania Land Office regarding John Hollingshead vs. William Morris in right of Jonathan Morris, January 3, [?]. 1 p., 8.125" x 13". Rodent damage to upper right corner; embossed paper and wax seal intact; toning.
"This case is postponed to the first monday in June next again which time the Deputy Surveyor of the District is directed by making a Resurvey of Morris's land fully to ascertain the quantity of his Survey, and if the quantity shall be less than his Warrant expresses to fill it up on that part which Mr Galbreath deposes he was required by Morris to take into his Survey and to make a return again the said first monday in June denoting the claim of Hollingshead."
Daniel Brodhead (1736-1809) was a brevet brigadier general in the Revolutionary War and served as Surveyor General of Pennsylvania from 1789 to 1800.
David Kennedy (1741-1796) served as Land Secretary of Pennsylvania from the late 1770s until his death.

Applicable shipping and handling charges will be added to the invoice. All items will ship with a signature required option, and full insurance. Most items are sent via Federal Express, with P. O. Box addresses being sent through USPS. We insure through Berkley Asset Protection with rates of $.70 per $100 of value, among the lowest insurance rates in the industry. Our shipping department cameras document every package, both outgoing and incoming, for maximum security. In addition, we compare our shipping and handling rates against those of other auction houses, to ensure that our charges are among the lowest in the trade.

Upon winning your item(s), you will receive an invoice with our in-house shipping and handling fees included. ***We will ship to the address as it appears on your invoice. If any changes to the shipping address need to be made, you must inform us immediately.***

International shipments: In order to comply with our insurance provider, all international shipments will be sent via Fed Ex and customs paperwork will show a value of $1.00. International buyers should contact our office directly with any questions regarding this policy.

Third-Party Shipping Option: If a third-party shipper is preferred, the buyer is responsible for contacting them directly to make shipping arrangements. For your convenience, we have provided some recommended shippers. For your protection, we will require a signed release from you, confirming your authorization for us to release your lots to your specified third-party. At that point, our responsibility and insurance coverage for your item(s) ceases. Items picked up by third-party shippers are required to pay Connecticut sales tax. Items requiring third-party shipping due to being oversized, fragile or bulky will be denoted in the item description.
