Five British imprints and a broadsheet published London on the topic of the American Civil War, specifically addressing England's role and opinion on the rebellion. Pamphlets are disbound and in excellent condition; broadsheet has multiple tears and minor separations at folds. Review images for condition.

"An Address to the British Public and all Sympathizers in Europe from the London Confederate States Aid Association." London: R. Phillips, Printer. 1862. 12mo. 16 pages. With original blue printed wrappers. An address in defense of the Southern States' right to secede: "They are now engaged in a war of defense against a most fearful odds of unscrupulous enemies."

"Peace or War? An Unbiased View of the American Crisis." By John Hopkins. London: Diprose and Bateman. 1861. 12mo. 15 pages. With printed front wrapper only. Reprinting of an essay proposing restraint in response to the arrest of John Slidell and James Mason by the US Navy while the Confederate envoys were on route to England aboard the British Mail steamer Trent.

"A Letter to William Howard Russell, LL. D. on Passages in his ‘Diary North and South.'" By Andrew Dickson White. London: Henry Stevens. 1863. 12mo. 37 pages. With original printed wrappers. A response by Cornell University co-founder and Unionist Andrew Dickson White of Dr. Russell's critique of the customs of the Northern States.

"The Means by Which the Prosperity of the Southern States of America May Be Restored." London: William Clowes and Sons. Undated, but likely circa 1865. A proposal to create a cotton-backed loan to help rebuild the Southern economy as well as provide cotton to British textile mills. Before the Civil War, almost 80% of the cotton used in British textile mills came from the American South.

"Southern Independence. Address by James Spence, Esq. of Liverpool, at the Public Meeting in Stockport." Broadside printed in four columns on recto only, 12.4" x 19.25". Reprinted from the "Stockport and Cheshire County News," November 7, 1863. With binding tab along left, though produced for distribution as a standalone. With nail holes at top and left suggesting it was likely contemporaneously displayed.

Great collection of primary source material indicating the dependance of Great Britain on raw goods from the Southern States as well as the precarious balancing act in maintaining neutrality in the War.

Unless otherwise indicated, we do our own in-house world-wide shipping!

Applicable shipping and handling charges will be added to the invoice. We offer several shipping options, and remain one of the few auction houses that proudly provides professional in-house shipping as an option to our clients. All items will ship with a signature required option, and full insurance. Most items are sent via Federal Express, with P. O. Box addresses being sent through USPS. We insure through Berkley Asset Protection with rates of $.70 per $100 of value, among the lowest insurance rates in the industry. Our shipping department cameras document every package, both outgoing and incoming, for maximum security. In addition, we compare our shipping and handling rates against those of other auction houses, to ensure that our charges are among the lowest in the trade.

Upon winning your item(s), you will receive an invoice with our in-house shipping and handling fees included. ***We will ship to the address as it appears on your invoice. If any changes to the shipping address need to be made, you must inform us immediately.***

International shipments: In order to comply with our insurance provider, all international shipments will be sent via Fed Ex and customs paperwork will show a value of $1.00. International buyers should contact our office directly with any questions regarding this policy.

Third-Party Shipping Option: If a third-party shipper is preferred, the buyer is responsible for contacting them directly to make shipping arrangements. For your convenience, we have provided some recommended shippers. For your protection, we will require a signed release from you, confirming your authorization for us to release your lots to your specified third-party. At that point, our responsibility and insurance coverage for your item(s) ceases. Items picked up by third-party shippers are required to pay Connecticut sales tax. Items requiring third-party shipping due to being oversized, fragile or bulky will be denoted in the item description.
