Five Presidents Signed Photograph, Retained and Loved By Jimmy Carter One of a Few From His Estate
SP

Five Presidents signed photograph from the Estate of Jimmy Carter. 8" x 10"; Ronald Reagan Presidential Library in Simi Valley, California; [November 4, 1991]. This now iconic image was taken at a rare gathering of all living former Presidents at the time on the occasion of the dedication of the Reagan Library. Each President has signed directly beneath his image: "George Bush", "Ronald Reagan", "J Carter", "Gerald R. Ford", and "Richard Nixon." Obtained from "The Estate of Jimmy and Rosalynn Carter" Auction at Brunk held February 26. 2026. Exceptional condition. Comes with a COA signed by John Reznikoff, University Archives President, and PSA & JSA Authenticator; and Luke Pascal, Historical Autographs Gallery President, and Autograph & Relic Expert at University Archives.

Per a letter by Gerald Ford declining to sign a similar photograph, the five men had made and agreement to sign only "a limited number of prints and no more" in order "to preserve the historical value of the five Presidents' autographed photo." Ford explains that of the photos he received, "a substantial percentage" were gifted to charity, and the rest were presented to cabinet members, former staffers, and family. (A copy of Ford's letter is included.)

One such example presented by Ronald Reagan to Betsy Bloomingdale sold for $20,000 in 2017 at Christie's with a transmittal letter from Reagan's Chief of Staff, Frederick J. Ryan, Jr. More recently, Christie's sold a Five Presidents SP also from Jimmy Carter's Estate for $15,240. The example offered here was sold as part of the Carters' Estate at Brunk along with other personal property including paintings, woodworking by Carter, and his Inaugural Proof 24kt Gold Medal. Although these historic signed photographs do appear at auction, exemplars with direct ties to one of the Presidents pictured, and more so documented from their estate are exceptionally scarce.

This item comes with a Certificate from John Reznikoff, a premier authenticator for both major 3rd party authentication services, PSA and JSA (James Spence Authentications), as well as numerous auction houses.
