Anna Harrison Free Frank

ANNA HARRISON (1775-1864) Address Leaf Franked "Free / Anna Harrison," 10" x 7.75" overall, panel 4.5" x 3.75". Manuscript postal marking "Cleves, O / 8 Feby" in upper left. Addressed by Mrs. Harrison to "Richard E. Stilwell Esqr. / New York." Circular paper loss at blank upper middle edge from seal at blank lower middle edge. Fine condition.

Anna Symmes, daughter of landowner and Judge John Cleves Symmes, married Lieutenant William Henry Harrison in 1795. President Harrison died on April 4, 1841, after serving just 32 days in office. His widow Anna was granted free use of the mails on September 9, 1841.

Richard E. Stilwell (1816-1885) was U.S. Commissioner and Clerk for the Southern District Court of New York. The day this letter was mailed, February 8th, was a day before the anniversary of the birth of William Henry Harrison.
