New York: McGraw-Hill Book Company, 1961. First Edition Eleventh Printing. Illustrated. Original dust jacket, worn and chipped at edges, not price clipped. Protective plastic book cover taped to covers at book flaps. Very good condition.


Inscribed "5-8-69 / Best Regards / to my friend / & Co-Worker / Winky Bartholf / from / John Maguire / R.M. 2c / P.T. 109." Maguire is mentioned on 37 pages! With Autograph Letter Signed "John Maguire" inside "Thank You" note card and original 1973 postmarked envelope, 3.25" x 4.75", each affixed with plastic tape on verso of half title; tape affects edges of three lines. Addressed by Maguire to Estelle W. Bartholf in Jacksonville, Florida. In full, "Dear Winky: I cant express enough my appreciation of the plaque you presented me. It will remind me forever of the wonderful years of association with you in the Marshals service. John Maguire."

Accompanied by two 1976 newspaper articles about Maguire.

John Maguire (1916-1990) was Lieutenant John F. Kennedy's radioman (Radio Man 2nd Class)and one of the 13 member crew of PT-109 torpedo boat, skippered by Kennedy when it was sunk by the Japanese destroyer Amagiri in August 1943. He later worked in Kennedy's congressional and presidential campaigns and after Kennedy was elected President, John Maguire was appointed U.S. Marshal for the Middle District of Florida. He was reappointed by President Lyndon B. Johnson.
