A warm photo depicting Nelson Mandela, South African anti-apartheid revolutionary, politician, and philanthropist, who served as President of South Africa from 1994 to 1999. He was South Africa's first black chief executive and the first elected in a fully representative democratic election. His government focused on dismantling the legacy of apartheid. The photo was taken during his official visit to the Federal Republic of Germany from May 21st until May 23rd 1996. In his political conversations with Federal Chancellor Dr. Helmut Kohl and others, Mandela discussed the political situation in South Africa after the passing of the new constitution as well as the bilateral economic relationships between the European Union and the Southern African Development Community (SADC).
