Description:

Financial Record for 1st Capital of the Massachusetts Bay Colony

A financial record for the town of Charlestown, Massachusetts made in May 1737. 4pp of a bifolium, measuring 9" x 14.75", Charlestown, Massachusetts, dated May 16, 1737. The record was compiled by Captain Jenner "to Enquire into the State of the Town Treasury or the Town's Income and to make Report thereof." The document has flattened folds with chipping, multiple separations, and paper loss. Some separations have been repaired with archival tape. Light uneven toning throughout with some spots of foxing.

A total account of all the Bonds, let and due, was found to be £1762 7 shillings, and 10 pence. Jenner then made several lists for which that said money should be appropriated, including "For the Use of the Town", "For the Use of the Poor", and "For the Use of the Free School." Jenner also includes a lengthy list of Bonds (let and due) currently in the hands of the Treasury.

Charlestown (also known as Mishawum) is the oldest neighborhood in Boston, Massachusetts and the first capital of the Massachusetts Bay Colony. The town was laid out in 1629 by engineer Thomas Graves, one of its earliest settlers, during the reign of Charles I of England. Thomas Jenner (1693-1765) was the son of David Jenner and a captain in the local military. In September 1720 he was selected to be the town clerk of Charleston, Massachusetts and at some unknown time served as Justice of the Peace (engraved on his tomb). He married Joanna Everton in 1718 and passed away at the age of 72 in 1765.
