Fidel Castro PSA NM-MT 8 Rare Signed Photo to Documentarian Saul Landau
Signed photograph

An extraordinary photographic postcard depicting a public engagement hosted by Fidel Castro (upper middle) as he stands with American documentary filmmaker Saul Landau. Havana, Cuba, dated April 16, 1960. Signed and inscribed in brown fountain pen at top left: "La Habana/ 16 Abril 60/ a Saul/ Fidel Castro". Landau's presence in the image is personally noted in Castro's hand, identified with an arrow as "Saul". Exhibits general handling wear and age toning throughout, with heavy isolated creasing at lower right not affecting image or inscription. Deckled edges present to outside margin. Mounted to stiff black board. 1p, measuring 5" x 3.5", encapsulated by PSA/DNA to an overall size of 6.5" x 10", receiving a designation of NM-MT 8.

Saul Landau (1936-2013) was an American journalist, filmmaker and activist most known for his 1968 documentary "Fidel", which offered an inside look at Castro's personal and political life. The film was notably met with violence upon its release in the United States, with cinemas around the country targeted in protest of its showing. Landau made several trips to Cuba throughout his career, with one such occasion including a backpack excursion in 1960 just months after the revolution. It was during this earlier period that the image was likely inscribed, highlighting his rare level of access and trust within the upper echelons of the Cuban government.

A member of the Fair Play for Cuba Committee (FPCC), Landau often suffered death threats, among other criticisms, for his portrayal of U.S. foreign policy in his work. The organization was founded in April 1960 as a way to provide grassroots support for the Cuban Revolution. It later opposed the Bay of Pigs invasion of 1961, and sympathized with their view during the Cuban Missile Crisis in 1962. The group organized trips to Cuba and, at its peak, had dozens of chapters across the United States, with other notable members and/or sponsors including Truman Capote, Maya Angelou, and Allen Ginsburg, among others.
