Fidel Castro Lot of 4 Early Photos

A fantastic collection of four photographs of Fidel Castro taken during the 1960s.

1.) A 9” x 7.5” glossy black and white photograph of Castro working in the cane fields, wearing a straw hat and wielding a machete. With an adhered news clipping at verso reading: "Prime Minister Fidel Castro went cane hunting with thousands of other volunteer Cuban workers and is said to have cut over 9,000 pounds of cane. Photographers were barred, but this is an official government release (AP)". Ink and pencil notations at verso, with a datestamp of "FEB 14 1961". Unevenly cut left edge. Moderate water damage and discoloration along right edge, largely confined to margin. Creasing and minor warping. In good plus condition.

2.) An 8” x 10” glossy black and white AP Wire photograph of Castro with baseball glove waiting to throw the first ball to inaugurate the 1965 National Baseball Championship in Havana. Associated Press wire information running along bottom states that Castro, a pitcher in his student days, was wildly cheered by the 27,000 fans present. Verso with Associated Press stamp in red, notations in black crayon and a purple datestamp of "FEB 3 1965". With RMY Auctions Letter of Authenticity. Staining at left, mostly isolated to margin. Stray ink mark at bottom. Soiling, toning and creasing. In very good condition.

3.) A 3.5” x 5” glossy black and white headshot of a smiling Castro in military fatigues. Verso has a slip of paper with Associated Press News Library Service information attached and is stamped "DEC 18 1961". With RMY Auctions Letter of Authenticity. Minor surface imperfections. In near fine condition.

4.) A 10" x 8" matte and satin-finish black and white Type 1 photograph of a uniformed Castro with his head resting on his hands, deep in thought. Ink notations at verso with "Look Magazine" copyright stamp. Creasing and minor warping. Light soiling. In near fine condition.

Fidel Castro (1926-2016) was a Cuban revolutionary and the head of Cuba's government until 2008. The longest-serving non-royal head of state in the 20th and 21st centuries, Castro polarized opinion throughout the world. His supporters view him as a champion of socialism and anti-imperialism whose revolutionary government advanced economic and social justice while securing Cuba's independence. Critics call him a dictator whose administration oversaw human rights abuses, the exodus of many Cubans, and the impoverishment of the country's economy.
