Felix Frankfurter TLS

1p TLS on Harvard University watermarked cream stationery paper with "Law School of Harvard University, Cambridge, Mass." letterhead signed by future Supreme Court Associate Justice Felix Frankfurter (1882-1965) as "Felix Frankfurter - " at center. In near fine condition with light expected paper folds. Page measures 5.25" x 8."

Frankfurter wrote this letter on November 7, 1935 from Cambridge, Massachusetts. Cardozo's correspondent, New York lawyer Harold Roland Shapiro, had recently sent the law professor a "reprint of your article, 'The Limitations of League Sanctions under International Law.'"

Austrian Jewish immigrant Felix Frankfurter graduated from Harvard Law School with a superb academic record; he later taught there. He joined the faculty in 1914, and would continue to teach there, almost without interruption, until his nomination to the Supreme Court by 33rd U.S. President Franklin Delano Roosevelt in 1939. Frankfurter served on the bench from 1941 until retiring in 1962.

Harold Roland Shapiro (active 1930-1970) was admitted to the New York bar in 1927. Shapiro served for many years as an Assistant District Attorney dealing with mainly criminal cases. Shapiro's scholarly interests were diverse: he published monographs on topics ranging from labor law to twentieth-century warfare. Shapiro also contributed to the New York Times and wrote book reviews. The article mentioned in this TLS was published in the U.S. Law Review in October 1935.
