FDR Signed Ltd. Ed. Etching Also Signed by Artist Gordon Grant! The Pair had Previously Collaborated in WWI U.S. Navy Binocular Drive
Signed print
A limited edition etching of 32nd U.S. President Franklin D. Roosevelt (1882-1945), signed by both the subject and artist Gordon Grant (1875-1962), #4/1000. Roosevelt has pen-signed it as "Franklin D Roosevelt" outside the image field at lower left; and Grant has pencil-signed it as "Gordon Grant" outside the image field at lower right. N.d., n.p. Also pencil-inscribed "4/1000" just above Roosevelt's signature. The closely cropped portrait of Roosevelt's head and shoulders emphasizes the politician's heavy-lidded, intense gaze. Expected age-related condition issues including even toning and scattered foxing, else very good to near fine. Matted and framed behind glass. Not examined out of the frame. The plate size of the etching is approximately 8.25" x 11" while the overall frame measures 16" x 19" x 1."

Gordon Grant had collaborated with Franklin Roosevelt once before, during Roosevelt's tenure as Assistant Secretary of the Navy, from 1913-1920. In 1917, Assistant Secretary Roosevelt had introduced a very popular wartime public outreach campaign that he called "Eyes for the Navy." This was exactly what it sounded like: a campaign urging civilians to temporarily loan their navigational equipment, spyglasses, field glasses, telescopes, and binoculars to the U.S. Navy. Gordon Grant, who was well-known for producing World War I propaganda posters, had created a remarkably effective poster advertising this drive, headlined "Will You Supply Eyes For The Navy… Will You Help Us 'Stand Watch' On A Destroyer?" The poster depicted a blind-folded naval officer impotently feeling around the ship's deck with his hands.
