In full:

"I have been delighted to receive that nice message of congratulations you sent me on the election. Although I am late in sending you this note, I do want you to know that I am ever so grateful for your thought of me. With my best wishes and heartiest greetings for Christmas and the New Year."

Franklin Delano Roosevelt, 32nd President (1882-1945), served as a two-term New York State Senator, the Assistant Secretary of the Navy during World War I, Governor of New York, and then later as the 32nd President elected in 1932. He enacted a series of programs, public works projects, financial reforms, and financial regulations that would become known as "The New Deal" to help a struggling nation out of financial catastrophe.

Hugh S. Johnson (1882-1942) was a military officer, businessman, and newspaper columnist, yet he was most widely known for his work with President Roosevelt and the New Deal. He wrote numerous speeches for Roosevelt and was appointed the head of the National Recovery Administration by Roosevelt. As head of the NRA Johnson enacted his "blue eagle" campaign to reorganize American business to reduce competition and raise wages and prices. He was recognized as "Time's Person of the Year" in 1933 for his work. Public opinion later soured as Johnson struggled to work harmoniously with others, leading to his removal from the helm of the NRA in August of 1934.
