Description:

FDR (2) TLS to Col. at NY Arsenal Days After Governor Inauguration: "...fire the artillery salute"

A pair of two letters from then-Governor Franklin Roosevelt to Colonel Edwin Dyson Bricker (1875-1967) in the days following his inauguration in Albany, dated January 5 & 15, 1929, respectively. The letters came in response to Bricker, a commander at the Watervliet Arsenal in New York, having previously organized an artillery salute for the occasion. Both have been signed "Franklin D. Roosevelt" at the conclusion. A very good pairing overall, marking the beginning of his term as Governor.

The lot includes:

1.) TLS, 1p, measuring 8" x 10.5", dated January 5, 1929, Albany, NY. Reading in part: "Please accept my thanks for your kindness in assigning an Ordinance detachment from your Arsenal, to fire the artillery salute at the Inaugural ceremony." Exhibits isolated soiling near top left, with minor puncture holes present.

2.) TLS, 1p, measuring 8" x 10.5", dated January 15, 1929, Albany NY. In full: "I wish to thank you for the cooperation and assistance which you rendered at the ceremonies incident to my inauguration as Governor." Lightly toned, with puncture holes present near to left, suggesting the two have likely been attached at one time.

Franklin D. Roosevelt (1882-1945) was elected governor of New York in 1928 and served from January 1, 1929 until shortly after his election as President in 1932. His term as governor provided him with a high-visibility position in which to prove himself as well as provide a major base from which to launch a bid for the presidency. Among his achievements during this first term included reform to the state's prison administration and the implementation of a new relief system following the 1929 stock market crash, which later became the model for the New Deal.
