Partially printed DS
ANDREW P. BUTLER, Partially Printed Document Signed, Voucher for Payment of $228 from J. N. Lipscombe, July 8, 1861, Richmond, VA. 1 p., 9.5" x 7.75". Docketing on verso; expected folds; some staining; minor water damage; very good.

In the early months of the Civil War, the Confederate States of America repurposed Virginia forms like this pay voucher for 1st Lieutenant A. P. Butler of Company A of the 1st South Carolina Volunteers. With this form, Butler acknowledged receipt of $228 for his pay from April 22 to July 8, 1861, at a rate of $90 per month. The top of the form bears the printed designation "The Commonwealth of Virginia," which has been stricken and replaced with "Confederate States of America." The same emendation occurs in the body of the document.

The 1st South Carolina Volunteers under the command of Col. Maxcy Gregg (1814-1862), consisted of the Richland Rifles, of Columbia; Darlington Guards; Edgefield Rifles; Union District Volunteers; Edgefield Guards; Monticello Guards; Rhett Guards, of Newberry; and Richardson Guards, of Charleston. They first served in Charleston Harbor during the bombardment of Fort Sumter and then transferred to the banks of the Potomac River in Virginia. James Nathan Lipscomb (1827-1891) served as paymaster.

Andrew Pickens Butler (1826-1902) was born in South Carolina and named for his uncle, who later served as U.S. Senator from South Carolina (1846-1857). Senator Charles Sumner's criticism of the elder Butler led Butler's cousin Preston Brooks to attack Sumner on the floor of the U.S. Senate in May 1856, nearly killing him. The younger Butler's father was killed in battle during the Mexican War. Andrew Pickens Butler became a cotton planter and enlisted as a lieutenant in the 1st Regiment of South Carolina Volunteers in April 1861. He rose to the rank of captain in a brigade of cavalry in the Army of Northern Virginia. He was captured in a skirmish south of Petersburg in October 1864 and spent the remainder of the war in the Old Capitol Prison in Washington and at Fort Delaware in the Delaware River between Delaware and New Jersey. After the war, he served in the South Carolina Senate (1876-1879) and as the South Carolina Commissioner of Agriculture (1879-1890).
