Description:

Fantastic, Huge Civil War Recruiting Broadside

Broadside, "Patriots Arouse!", 1p, 20.75" x 27.25", Providence, Rhode Island, circa 1862. Folds and minor waviness. Some small areas of loss and tears. Toning and dampstaining.  Attractively framed to an overall size of 25" x 32". Not examined out of frame. This very broadside recently sold for nearly $5,000 at Hindman Auctions.

Featuring an illustration of a galloping horse at top, the broadside urges recruitment with a zealous plea: "Cavalry Men Wanted! / To form a Battalion under / Major A. W. Corliss. / Now is the time to join a Crack Battalion for the Gallant / General Burnside's division! / 400 Dollars Bounty! / Families provided for by the State! / Rally! Rally!! Rally!!!"

Commanded by Lt. Col. A. W. Corliss, the 2nd Rhode Island Cavalry Regiment was organized in Providence, Rhode Island and mustered on November 21, 1862, for a three-year enlistment. The regiment never reached full strength, despite the enthusiastic recruitment broadside. They would be detached to Louisiana and involved in the operations and siege against Port Hudson. In August 1863, the regiment was consolidated and then attached to the 1st Louisiana Cavalry. After January 14, 1864, its veterans were transferred to the 3rd Rhode Island Cavalry.

Augustus Whittemore Corliss (1837-1908) was an American author and historian. During the Civil War, he was in command of the 7th Rhode Island Cavalry Squadron, which was organized in Providence, Rhode Island. He also became lieutenant colonel of the 2nd Rhode Island Cavalry Regiment. Corliss later joined the United States Army as a private and received a commission in 1865 as first lieutenant of the 15th Infantry Regiment.

Ambrose Everett Burnside (1824-1881) was an American army officer and politician who became a senior Union general in the Civil War and three-time Governor of Rhode Island, as well as being a successful inventor and industrialist. In October 1853, Burnside resigned his commission in the United States Army and was appointed commander of the Rhode Island state militia with the rank of major general. He held this position for two years. A modest and unassuming individual, Burnside could be described as a genuinely unlucky man, both in battle and in business, where he was robbed of the rights to a successful cavalry firearm that had been his own invention. His spectacular growth of whiskers became known as "sideburns", deriving from the two parts of his surname.
