Jefferson Thomas 1743 - 1826

Fantastic framed Thomas Jefferson ALS.

A handsome framed single page ALS by Thomas Jefferson, 6.5" x 3.5". The letter is lightly toned, with clear and contrasting ink. Dated "Monticello Apr.18.26" and signed by Jefferson as "Th Jefferson". Matted in a stunning slate blue suede mat, and framed together with a lovely engraved portrait of Jefferson to a finished frame size of 24.5" x 29".

Jefferson, for all his political successes, was never successful financially. Throughout his life he battled debt, even selling his precious library to raise funds. Even a mere six weeks before his death on July 4, 1826, the fiftieth anniversary of the declaration of Independence, he was still attempting to pay off his massive debts. In this letter he asks:

"Monticello Apr.18.26"

Dear Sir,

I received yesterday your favor of the 8th inst and this day desire Col. Bernard Peyton, my correspondent in Richmond to remit to you for messr Dodge and Oxnard, on my account the sum of 124d.61c as stated in your letter, which I hope will get safely and speedily to hand. I salute you with great esteem and respect.

Th Jefferson"

Bernard Peyton, a member of the famous Peyton family, was Jefferson's young protege. Only twice did Jefferson ever solicit President Monroe for an office, and when Monroe turned down Bernard Peyton's application for a position, Jefferson was deeply wounded.
