Famous Authors, 5 Pieces Including Kipling & London - Tremendous Dealers' Lot!

A diverse 5-piece dealers' lot for admirers of exemplary English language literature. Featuring the letters and autographs of celebrated British and American writers Rudyard Kipling, Jack London, Frances Hodgson Burnett, James Whitcomb Riley, and Sir Anthony Hope Hawkins.

The lot consists of:

1. 1p TLS signed by British author Rudyard Kipling (1865-1936) as "Rudyard Kipling" at center. Written at Bateman's, Kipling's home in Burwash, Sussex, England, on October 18, 1923. On watermarked cream laid stationery paper with "Burwash / Etchingham / Bateman's / Burwash / Sussex" letterhead. Kipling thanks a press agency for forwarding him photographs of a recent visit to Scotland; Kipling had delivered a Rectorial Address entitled "Independence" at St. Andrews just a week earlier, on October 10, 1923. Double hole-punched at left. Expected light paper folds, else near fine. 7.875" x 10.375".

2. Check inscribed and signed by American adventure writer Jack London (1876-1916) as “Jack London” at lower right. The unnumbered check dated June 27, 1906 was issued from the Central Bank of Oakland in the amount of $27.00 made payable to the "International College of Languages". Stamped verso. With a y-shaped cancellation mark at center, else near fine. 6.625" x 2.75".

3. 4pp ALS inscribed overall and signed by British-born American novelist Frances Hodgson Burnett (1849-1924) as "Frances Hodgson Burnett" at the center of the last page. An undated letter on cream stationery with a mourning band and "Massachusetts Avenue / 1770" letterhead. In part: "It is all very well for you to say…You can always see me if you think it worthwhile to make the least effort. I thought you were in New York…You are a desirable person. I have no opinion of you whatever…" The letter's mention of a "Stephen" probably refers to Burnett's second husband, Stephen Townsend, to whom she was married between 1900-1902.

4. Portion of an envelope fragment inscribed, dated, and signed by American poet James Whitcomb Riley (1849-1916) as "Best greetings, / - James Whitcomb Riley / Nov. 6: / 1907". 3" x 3.25".

5. Calling card signed by British novelist Sir Anthony Hope Hawkins (1863-1933) as "Anthony Hope Hawkins". Minor mounting residue verso.
