Washington George 1732 - 1799 Facsimile of President and Mrs. Washington's engraved invitation to dine - from the Papers of Mrs. Grover Cleveland
Comprises:
(1) Printed Invitation on 5.25" x 3.5" card. The invitee's name and the day and time of the dinner are blank and not filled in. Vertical fold at right. Good condition.
A facsimile of the invitation sent by President and Mrs. Washington to dine in the President's House in Philadelphia. The original invitation was printed on paper, not on a card.
Following a 16 month stay in New York City, George and Martha Washington occupied the President's House in Philadelphia from November 1790 to March 1797.
In full, "The President of the United States and Mrs. Washington request the Pleasure of ________ Company to Dine, on _____ next, at ____ o'Clock. _______ 179_ An answer is requested"
(2) Accompanied by an Autograph Note Unsigned on a calling card, 3.5" x 2.5", engraved "Mrs. Charles S. Fairchild / 1347 Connecticut Avenue." Writer unknown but probably Helen Lincklaen Fairchild. Fine condition
In full, "One of the fac-similes which Mr Edward Everett caused to be made of President Washington's original card of invitation to dinners."
Edward Everett (1794-1865) was Governor of Massachusetts (1836-1840), U.S. Envoy to England (1841-1845), President of Harvard, (1846-1849), Fillmore's Secretary of State (1852-1853), and Massachusetts U.S. Senator (1853-1854).
New York businessman Charles S. Fairchild (1842-1924) served as President Grover Cleveland's Secretary of the Treasury from 1887-1889. His wife was Helen Lincklaen Fairchild (1845-1931). A 1922 letter from Frances F. Cleveland Preston to Mrs. Charles S. Fairchild is in the New-York Historical Society Library.
