News Release

“This issue of our paper carried by Lieutenants White and McMullen on their record-breaking flight from New York to Buenos Aires, Argentina, was returned to us today after having made the 7,000 mile trip. A new record of 5 days and 5 hours. Our paper, certified in the Buenos Aires offices of the Foreign Advertising & Service Bureau of New York, sponsors of this event, accompanied the fliers as a souvenir of the flight which was dedicated to the important papers of the world.”

“Lieutenants White and McMullen shattered all existing records between New York and Buenos Aires and intermediate points. From Newark Airport to Miami, Florida, the fliers reduced the flying time three hours. For the first time in the history of aviation, a land plane conquered the treacherous air currents of the Caribbean. All along the route, from Miami to Panama to Santiago, Chile to Buenos Aires, new flying records made this trip unique in the history of aviation.”

Historical Background

Aviation captured the public imagination after World War I, as aviators attempted and accomplished numerous challenging flights. From the first flight around the world by two planes in 1924 to Charles A. Lindbergh’s non-stop solo flight across the Atlantic Ocean in 1927 to Amelia Earhart’s first solo flight across the Atlantic by a woman in 1932, the period was filled with aviation firsts.

The Foreign Advertising & Service Bureau of New York was founded in 1903 and is the oldest United States advertising agency that operated exclusively in the international field. To promote their business, the Bureau sponsored the flight to enhance communications and advertising opportunities between North and South America. President Maurice Pereles had the pilots take along front pages of many newspapers to encourage widespread coverage of the flight.

After postponing for a day due to bad weather, Lieutenants Will W. White (1900-1976) and Clements McMullen (1892-1959) of the U.S. Army Air Corps left from Newark on February 14, 1930, for their flight in a single-engine Lockheed-Vega airplane. They refueled in Miami and Panama and arrived in Lima, Peru, on February 17. They reached Buenos Aires just after 3:00 p.m. on February 19, having traveled 6,870 miles at an average speed of 130 miles per hour. The pilots returned to Newark on an ocean liner.
