Description:

Frank Lloyd Wright
n.p., n.d.
F.L. Wright Signed 1st Ed., "An Autobiography, Book Six: Broadacre City," Unused 6th Chapter, Presented to Rabbi
Signed booklet

A first edition copy of Frank Lloyd Wright (1867-1959), "An Autobiography, Book Six: Broadacre City" ([Spring Green, Wisconsin]: Taliesen Press, Summer, 1943), signed and inscribed by Wright on the front loose endpaper as: "Dear Rabbi Wise - This pattern of Democracy. Frank Lloyd Wright." N.d., n.p. With brown publisher's wrappers as issued, featuring a stylized cover design and stapled binding. Printed on newsprint. Expected wear including mostly even toning, and some partly detached or professionally reattached pages. Isolated corner page loss, chipped edges, and closed tears. The Wright signed page has been professionally restored with Japanese tissue and in no way affects his signature or inscription. Else good. 2; 1-30pp. 8.375" x 8.5". Sweeney 2048.

This short chapter published in booklet form was intended for inclusion in an upcoming revised and expanded edition of Wright's "An Autobiography," a work which originally debuted in 1932. The revised and expanded "An Autobiography" was published later in 1943 by New York publisher Duell, Sloan, and Pearce, but did not include this material. In this chapter, Wright explains how he first began thinking about democracy in its relation to architecture, and elaborates on his ongoing objective to create Broadacre City, a hypothetical suburban commuter community. Wright first wrote about Broadacre City in the early 1930s and returned to the concept in this imprint and others up until his death in 1959.

Frank Lloyd Wright created over 1,000 architectural plans over his 70-year-long career, of which more than half were constructed. Wright's pioneering design approach incorporated function, aesthetics, and the environment, and fundamentally changed late 19th and early 20th C. architecture. In addition to architectural design, Wright wrote many books, served as a mentor, and also designed furniture and decorative arts.

This item comes with a Certificate from John Reznikoff, a premier authenticator for both major 3rd party authentication services, PSA and JSA (James Spence Authentications), as well as numerous auction houses.
