Description:

Revolutionary War -

Extracts of American Continental Congress, held at Philadelphia on the 5th of September, 1774 containing a list of grievances and the Bill of Rights; presaging the Declaration of Independence with the words "... Life, liberty and property".

Soft wrappers, 4.5" x 7.25", foxed with small dime size spot to the front. 56 pages, sewn as issued. Internal pages in great condition. Rear of book contains numerous bent corner tips. 2 pages with small pen marks, and rear fly leaf with delicate scripted owner name and date (1793).

An important statement of American resistance from the First Continental Congress, as the Americans boldly assert their rights, but try to do so as loyal British subjects. Their statement of rights presages the language of the Declaration of Independence. "The inhabitants of the English colonies in North America, by the immutable laws of nature, the principles of the English constitution, and the several charters or compacts, have the following RIGHTS: That they are entitled to life, liberty and property; and they have never ceded to any sovereign power whatever, a right to dispose of either without their consent..."
