Description:

Extensive Korean War-Era Photograph & Ephemera Collection, 200+ Pcs

A large collection of photographs, postcards, maps, newspaper articles, and other ephemera from American servicemen serving in South Korea, Ca. 1948-1970. The 170 or so photographs date from the Korean War (along with prior Inter-Korean border skirmishes) and include rarely photographed subjects, such as African American servicemen. The overwhelming majority are vintage photographs, with nearly half annotated or with printed captions. The archive also includes 24 photo postcards, various maps, field manuals, troop programs, a smattering of holiday cards, patches, a pin and meal card, and other war-related miscellanies. Very good to near fine condition, with expected wear and toning. Currently stored in two velvet albums and three three-ring binders.

The lot is comprised of:

1. Approximately 170 photographs, the majority being black and white, of various sizes. Some photographs are stamped on verso by the Department of Defense. This incredible photograph archive depicts every imaginable subject one might expect to find from such a collection, from the military scenes (military equipment, prisoner exchanges, barracks, refugees, wounded and war dead, etc.) to human interest and cultural history (playing ping pong and volleyball, interacting with locals, fraternizing with local women, etc.) A few of these images also depict black servicemen and female servicewomen or nurses. One of the binders is attributed to serviceman Donald W. Sherwood, 1st Marine Division.

Some representative captions found in the archive include:

- "Get a load of that Korean pipe I'm smoking. Reminds me of the early Indian peace-pipes. Note the Korean gal's dress."
- "A Korean father, your nephew & our little mascot interpreter, Lee Chon Som. A Korean (cheap) home in back-ground."
- "The sweetest Korean girl I have met in this 'hell-hole'."
- "Wounded soldier being given plasma while being evacuated by helicopter to MASH."

2. Ephemera and miscellany, including:

- 24 photograph postcards showing war action such as machine-gun fire, firing shells, flame throwers, bombings, etc.
- Troop Information Program (TIP), January 31, 1948.
- Field Manual and First Aid Booklet, Pocket Guide to Japan, Pocket Guide to Korea, and a diagram for the "Arrangement of Contents of Foot Locker".
- Cards and passes (meal card, dormitory ticket, hotel card, leave pass), etc.
- Propaganda leaflet entitled "Proof of Guilt".
- VFW Magazine, dated June/July 1993
- Appointment Certificate, issued to Donald W. Sherwood, making him a "Temporary" Corporal in the Marine Corps Reserve
- Several Thanksgiving and Christmas Cards and Programs
- Numerous Maps of Asia and Korea

The archive just briefly described here and with highlighted pictures, merits many more hours of further research, and will surely prove to be an incredible addition to any collection.
