Expansive Group of European Royalty Signed Documents, Dating 1703-1922

A large archive related to European royalty, dating from 1703-1922 and covering the royal families of Great Britain, Spain, France, and the Holy Roman Empire. The lot includes nine signed documents as well as 8 printed Acts of Parliament. Expected wear including overall toning, folds, wrinkles, and isolated loss. Many pieces have been professionally repaired. All with bold signatures. Please refer to photographs for further condition information.

The lot includes the following:
1. Josephus II, Holy Roman Emperor Document Signed "Josephus." N.p., dated March 1, 1773. On a large page of vellum, written in Latin. Untranslated.

2. George III Document Signed "GR." N.p., dated November 25, 1805. The king approves a proposal on "The Recruiting District under the order of the Inspecting Field Officer at Leeds, comprehending the counties of York and Lancaster…being from the extent found inconvenient for carrying on the service under the Inspection of One Field Officer; it is Humbly proposed to His Majesty the District be divided…and an additional Field Officer be appointed…"

3. Louis XV Document Signed "Louis." N.p., dated ca. 1766. Written in French, granting a two-month passport.

4. John Douglas Sutherland, Duke of Argyll ALS "Argyll." Argyllshire, dated December 5, 1876. Likely addressed to his publishers, Argyll writes about a paper on "Agricultural Tenancies" which he was preparing. Marked "Private."

5. Alfonso XIII Document Signed "Alfonso RH." Madrid, dated ca. 1921-22. A Notice of Dividend Re: H.W. & W.L. Birch, Trading as Mildred Goyeneche & Co. Signed by Alfonso as Creditor, for £5:9:9.

6. Frederick Prince of Wales Letter Signed "Frederick P." London, dated January 2/13, 1736. Written in German. Addressed to a German prince to thank him for sending New Year's wishes and reciprocating them.

7. George IV Document Signed "George R." London, dated December 15, 1825. Appointing John Strange Chapman as "Hospital Assistant to our forces…" With wax and paper seal, as well as a ten-shilling revenue stamp.

8. Sidney Godolphin, 1st Earl Document Signed "Godolphin." London, dated June 19, 1703. A Treasury order for £500 to be repaid to Sir Thomas Littleton (Speaker of the House of Commons and treasurer of the Navy) for money lent to Her Majesty, Queen Anne.

9. Sarah Churchill Document Signed "S. Marlborough." N.p., dated June 19, 1728. Acknowledging a payment of £5,000 from Sir Sidney Compton to Francis Godolphin, William Clayton, and John Hanbury, all trustees of the late Duke of Marlborough.

10. Eight Printed Parliamentary Acts Directed by George III. London, dating from 1799 to 1807. All concern the East India Company, which was a joint-stock company founded in 1600 to trade in the Indian Ocean region. At its peak, the company was the largest corporation in the world and even had its own armed forces, totaling about 260,000 soldiers. Includes Acts such as: "An Act for better Recruiting the Forces of the East India Company", "An Act to enable the East India Company to defray the Expenses of certain Volunteer Corps raised by the said Company", and "An Act to enable the Court of Directors of the East India Company to make reasonable Allowances to the Owners of certain Ships…"

Applicable shipping and handling charges will be added to the invoice. All items will ship with signature required, and full insurance. Most items are sent via Federal Express, with P. O. Box addresses being sent through USPS. We insure through Berkley Asset Protection with rates of $.70 per $100 of value, among the lowest insurance rates in the industry. Our shipping department cameras document every package, both outgoing and incoming, for maximum security. In addition, we compare our shipping and handling rates against those of other auction houses, to ensure that our charges are among the lowest in the trade.

Upon winning your item(s), you will receive an invoice with our in-house shipping and handling fees included. ***We will ship to the address as it appears on your invoice. If any changes to the shipping address need to be made, you must inform us immediately.***

International shipments: In order to comply with our insurance provider, all international shipments will be sent via Fed Ex and customs paperwork will show a value of $1.00. International buyers should contact our office directly with any questions regarding this policy.
