Prince George Duke of Cambridge (1819-1904) Archive of 7 letters from Prince George, grandson of King George III - with excellent military content

Archive of seven ALSs "George," total of 14 pages, 4.5" x 7.25". All from London, five from Gloucester House, Park Lane W., 1858-1897. Minor flaws are described. Various recipients. Very Good to fine condition. His title, Duke of Cambridge, fell into extinction upon his death. It was not revived until 107 years later in 2011 when Queen Elizabeth II awarded the title to her grandson, Prince William, on the day of his wedding. Prince William's son, born in 2013, is Prince George of Cambridge.

Excerpts

(1) Hun Guards, June 9, 1858. To Sir Hamilton Seymour. "I send you back the enclosed with such explanation as I can get. I never need such a production in my life & could not find any single person including the Vice President of our Board of Military Education." Mounting remnants, light soiling.

(2) Gloucester House, July 30, 1870. To Sir Hamilton Seymour during the Franco-Prussian War. "I am extremely grieved that I am unable to comply with your request regarding your sons being allowed to join the French Army. The French Government has positively interdicted the presence of any Foreign Officers with their Army." Mounting remnants on blank verso of third page.

(3) Gloucester House, January 4, 1881. Black-bordered. To sculptor Count Gleichen, Queen Victoria's nephew. "I think it would be very satisfactory indeed if you were to have the Monument entrusted to your execution for the Artillery Officer & men who lost their lives in the recent Campaign and if I am consulted I shall not hesitate to put forward your claim to erect this work"

(4) Gloucester House, June 27, 1892. To Mrs. Seymour. "I have heard from Mrs. Vigner that you would Kindly wish me to lunch with you one of these days. I shall be most happy to do so. Would you like it to be next Saturday 2nd or Tuesday 5th or Wednesday 6th or any other day that suits you better."

(5) Jockey Club, Newmarket, June 28, 1892. To Mrs. Seymour. "I shall be delighted to have lunch with you on Saturday next July 2nd & shall bring... Augustus with me."

(6) Gloucester House, July 13, 1893. To Mrs. Seymour. "I hope this Photo will be found... by you, it is one of the last taken of me. I am ashamed of having kept your letter so long unanswered."

(7) Gloucester House, July 30, 1997. To Mrs. Leo Seymour. "I am delighted to hear that your son has passed the Medical Examination & that he has been Gazetted to the Guardian Guards & I congratulate you on this satisfacory recall & remain, Yours very truly, George" Mounting remnants on verso.
