Vice President Nixon encloses "a copy of the speech I made on Friday evening to the Young Republican Convention" (not present). In part, "For twenty years our opponents have been beating us over the head with the claim that Republican economic policies meant depression and that Democratic policies meant good times. The Eisenhower record has destroyed this myth once and for all, and it seems to me that it is time we did a better job of letting the people know what has happened.

"I thought you might be interested, too, in the line I am following with regard to building the strength of the Republican Party. It seems to me that instead of continually stating the obvious, ‰Û÷We have to have Ike,' -- we should recognize the responsibility we all have to do our part as well‰Û_"

On page one of the June 1, 1955 "Los Angeles Times," Times Washington Bureau Chief Robert T. Hartmann reported that there was a "widely circulated report that certain Republican elements hope to force Nixon's replacement on the GOP ticket, if the President is a candidate, by uniting behind Senate Minority Leader William F. Knowland (R) California, with the assistance of California's Gov. Knight. This report also described Knight as a Vice Presidential aspirant‰Û_"

Undoubtedly, this letter was a result of this report. A conservative Republican, James S. Copley (1916-1973) was publisher of the "San Diego Union," "The San Diego Union-Tribune," and the "San Diego Evening Tribune" from 1947 until his death in 1973. He was Chairman of the Board of The Copley Press, a newspaper chain comprising 15 daily and 32 weekly publications.
