A group of engravings depicting a variety of European subjects including monarchs, aristocrats, and military heroes, as imagined by both American and European artists. Ca. 1776-1858. Various places. Please refer to catalog photos for additional information related to condition, which is overall good to very good. The largest print measures 16" x 12.25."

The archive includes, in chronological order:

1. Johann Gotthard Muller after Jean-Baptiste Greuse, translated title: "Jean George Wille, Engraver of the King, and their Imperial Majesties and Royalty, and of His Majesty the King of Denmark, of the Academy of Paris, Vienna, Rouen, Augsburg and Dresden." Ca. 1776. Paris, France. An engraving depicting a bust portrait of a fellow printmaker, complete with a trompe-l'oeil garlanded frame. The title, artist names, publication, and copyright information is found below in French. Even toning and scattered foxing. 10.375" x 12.75."

2. Francesco Bartolozzi after John Francis Rigaud, "Edward Prince of Wales presenting the Captive, King John of France & his Son to his Father Edward the 3rd after the Battle of Poictiers [Poitiers]." N.d. but ca. 1788. [London, England.] A stipple etching depicting the defeated French king submitting to the English king following the decisive Battle of Poitiers during the Hundred Years War. The artist names and title are printed at the bottom. Scattered foxing and isolated loss to the lower left corner. Trimmed to an overall size of 15.625" x 12.625."

3. Charles Gauthier Playter after William Hamilton, "Henry the Eighth. Reproving the officiousness of Lord Chancellor Wriothesely, who had by the Kings command come into the garden to carry the Queen (Catherine Parr) to Prison, at the moment she had the address to change the Kings purpose." Ca. 1792. London, England. A stipple etching depicting the furious Tudor monarch garbed in sumptuous court dress at center. The title, artist names, publication, and copyright information is found below. Light weathering and grubbiness. Isolated stains and loss to the lower right corner. Minor mounting traces verso. Else clear and sharp. 15.875" x 13.25."

4. Attributed to C. Williams, published by Walker & Knight, "See the Conquering Hero Comes, Sound Your Trumpets Beat your Drums, None but the Brave deserve the Fair Wellington's welcome to Madrid." Ca. 1812. London, England. A color etching depicting the Duke of Wellington liberating Spain from Napoleonic forces. A closed tear and minor loss to the upper right corner. Laid down on a stock mount and matted. The front mat is included but detached. The actual size of the print is 12.875" x 9" while the mat size is 16" x 12.25."

5. Nathaniel Currier, "Attack of the Lion." N.d. but ca. 1838-1856. New York, New York. A color lithograph depicting a lion attacking a Crusader and maiden on a white war horse. Printed information outside the image. Uneven foxing and discoloration. 9.125" x 13."

6. An excised book plate, Plate 65, from a Spanish-language book entitled "Iconografia Española." A lithograph by J. Donon after Valentin Carderera y Solano. N.d. but ca. 1858. Madrid, Spain. The translated title is: "Don Íñigo Lopez de Mendoza. Second Count of Tendilla." Printed information outside the image. Uneven toning and scattered stains mostly affecting the edges. Trimmed to a completed size of 9.125" x 13.125."

Unless otherwise indicated, we do our own in-house world-wide shipping!

Applicable shipping and handling charges will be added to the invoice. We offer several shipping options, and remain one of the few auction houses that proudly provides professional in-house shipping as an option to our clients. All items will ship with a signature required option, and full insurance. Most items are sent via Federal Express, with P. O. Box addresses being sent through USPS. We insure through Berkley Asset Protection with rates of $.70 per $100 of value, among the lowest insurance rates in the industry. Our shipping department cameras document every package, both outgoing and incoming, for maximum security. In addition, we compare our shipping and handling rates against those of other auction houses, to ensure that our charges are among the lowest in the trade.

Upon winning your item(s), you will receive an invoice with our in-house shipping and handling fees included. ***We will ship to the address as it appears on your invoice. If any changes to the shipping address need to be made, you must inform us immediately.***

International shipments: In order to comply with our insurance provider, all international shipments will be sent via Fed Ex and customs paperwork will show a value of $1.00. International buyers should contact our office directly with any questions regarding this policy.

Third-Party Shipping Option: If a third-party shipper is preferred, the buyer is responsible for contacting them directly to make shipping arrangements. For your convenience, we have provided some recommended shippers. For your protection, we will require a signed release from you, confirming your authorization for us to release your lots to your specified third-party. At that point, our responsibility and insurance coverage for your item(s) ceases. Items picked up by third-party shippers are required to pay Connecticut sales tax. Items requiring third-party shipping due to being oversized, fragile or bulky will be denoted in the item description.
