Debs Eugene

1p TLS on "Theodore Debs, Terre Haute, Ind." letterhead signed by Eugene Victor Debs (1855-1926) as "E.V. Debs" at lower right. Pale green watermarked stationery printed with purple ink. In very good to near fine condition. Expected paper folds, some brittle and with minor splitting. The page measures 8.375" x 10.875".

Labor activist Eugene V. Debs wrote author Hildegarde Hawthorne (1871-1952) on August 30, 1909 from his hometown of Terre Haute, Indiana, using the term "Comrade" no less than four times in this letter. The American mouthpiece of the Socialist Party wrote in part: "I had a delightful little visit with Comrades 'Stevie' and Sadie and we so wished you to be with us. They brought with them the dear young comrade whose sister is to wed your brother."

Eugene V. Debs is best known for being a labor organizer, but the high school dropout had also been a janitor, painter, fireman, and grocer. This 1909 letter dates in between one of Debs' five bids as presidential candidate for the Socialist Party (in 1900, 1904, 1908, 1912, and 1920). Debs was arrested after making a pacifist speech in 1918 although his sentence was later commuted.

Theodore Debs (1864-1945) wrote a biography of his older brother called Sidelights: Incidents in the Life of Eugene V. Debs.

Hildegarde Hawthorne wrote supernatural and children's short stories, novels, and biographies of Romantic writers like her grandfather, Nathaniel Hawthorne (1804-1864).
