Field Eugene

Eugene Field, Poet of Childhood, Writes 2 Letters to Friend in London

Eugene Field, autograph letter signed, to “Warren,” October 13, 1890, South Kensington, [London]. 1 p., 5" x 7.75"; and autograph letter signed, to “Warren,” May 20, 1894, Chicago. 1 p., 5" x 8".  Expected folds; very good.

These brief letters in Field’s distinctive tiny script were sent to his friend “Warren” in London. The first thanks his friend for condolences on the death of Field’s third child Melvin Gray Field (1878-1890) in London on October 3. A year earlier, the boy had swallowed a carpet tack, which eventually produced peritonitis. The second asks Warren to befriend Field’s friend Charles S. Wells, who would be working in London for an extended period.

Excerpts:

[1890:]
“I thank you for your kind note and am particularly grateful for the words of sympathy contained therein. Mrs. Field has not yet come from Germany, but that shall not prevent me from running in upon you in quite an informal way. Although I am by no means a Sanders yet, I have established more friendly relations with my enemy within me and therefore I am better prepared to conduct myself as a free moral and social agent.”

[1894:]
“My friend, Charles S. Wells, goes to London for an indefinite period and he will do library work while there. Your friendship will be much to him and I ask that you kindly bestow it upon him, for he is worthy of the favor of our kind of people.”

Eugene Field (1850-1895) was born in St. Louis and after the death of his mother in 1856, was raised by a cousin in Massachusetts. Field attended Williams College, but dropped out after less than a year, when his father died. He also attended Knox College in Illinois and the University of Missouri. He began his career as a newspaper journalist in St. Joseph, Missouri, in 1875. That year he married Julia Comstock, with whom he had eight children. He worked for newspapers in St. Louis, Kansas City, and Denver, before moving to Chicago in 1883 to work for the Chicago Daily News. Field began publishing poetry in 1879 and became famous for his poems for children. He also published a number of short stories before dying of a heart attack at age 45.
