Eugene Debs Signed Ltd 1st Edition of "Debs and the Poets"
Signed First Edition

A signed limited first edition copy of "Debs and the Poets" by Eugene V. Debs. Pasadena: Upton Sinclair, 1920. Twelvemo, 99pp with seven pages of ads at the back. No.289 of a limited issue of 500 copies signed by Eugene Debs on the limitation sheet mounted on the rear pastedown. The volume is a compilation of poems honoring socialist leader Eugene Debs by a variety of radical 20th-century poets including Witter Bynner, Max Eastman, Charlotte Perkins Gilman, Carl Sandburg, Siegfried Sassoon, Horace Traubel, and Israel Zangwill, many others. Sinclair contributed the foreword, along with letters from H.G. Wells and George Bernard Shaw. Bound in burgundy publisher's cloth with gilt lettering. Signed by a previous owner "Paula Huck 1921" on the front free end page. The volume's binding has become moderately warped, with creasing to the publisher's cloth and bowing to the covers. Light wear and bumping to corners and spine edges. Minor internal toning. Soundly bound. Boldly signed by Debs.

Eugene Victor Debs (1855-1926) was an American socialist and political activist, best-known for being a labor organizer and a founding member of the Industrial Workers of the World (IWW). A founding member of the Socialist Party of America (SPA), Debs initially served in leadership positions (as either Chairman or Executive Committee member) in the late 1890s. He would later run on the Socialist Party ticket for president five times, in 1900, 1904, 1908, 1912, and 1920.
