Ethel Dare Signed Photo, Legendary Wing-Walking Stuntwoman!
Signed photograph
A charming real photo postcard image of Ethel Gilmore, aka "Ethel Dare," standing atop the wing of a biplane and suited-up for flight. The card is 3.5" x 5.5" sepia, and signed at middle: "Yours truly Ethel Dare." Slight silvering to image, otherwise very good.

Ethel "Ethel Dare" Gilmore Johnson (1896-1924) was a pioneering aerial stunt woman known as "Queen of the Air" and "The Flying Witch." In 1917, Dare was picked up by Barnum & Bailey and became a flying trapeze artist, then garnered fame and the love of the public doing exciting stunts on planes in flight such as jumping off the wing of a plane, jumping from one speeding plane to another, and even washing her hair while standing on the wing of the plane! She also made 500 parachute jumps. Ethel died in a jump over Cassopolis, Indiana when she was performing one of her wing-walking tricks when she fell – newspapers say it was a 700 feet to 1,000 feet fall – when the new parachute she was testing failed to open. She was 28 years old.
