Description:

Essex Co. 1708 Sheriff Doc. Re: Relative of Witch Trial Judge B. Gedney

1p, measuring 7.5" x 4.75", Essex County, Massachusetts, dated July 13, 1708. A province treasury receipt addressed to Sheriff William Gedney, the nephew of Salem witch trial magistrate, Bartholomew Gedney. The receipt records two payments made on July 13 and September 14 for "transporting the province Treasurers warrants to the Selectmen of each Representative town within ye county Essex, Requiring them to make ye Province Tax for 1708", totaling £2 and 8 shillings. An additional note reads, "Error Expected Salem 14th Sept 1708." The text and signature are done in the clerk's hand and the receipt is unsigned by William Gedney himself. There is an illegible signature at the bottom, however, along with a note reading "allowed". With flattened folds, toning, and slightly uneven edges. A few areas of dampstaining. Overall very good.

William Gedney (1668-1730) was the son of John Gedney Jr., the half-brother of Bartholomew Gedney. He became the second Sheriff of Essex County in 1696 and held the position three separate times (1696-1702, 1702-1708, and 1710-1715). Bartholomew Gedney (1640-1698) was a Salem merchant, physician, and soldier, who served as a magistrate during the Salem witchcraft trials. He attended several examinations and served as a member of the Court of Oyer and Terminer.
