Erwin Rommel, the "Desert Fox", Twice Signed Photo Postcard
Signed Photograph
A twice-signed photographic postcard of Nazi field marshal Erwin Rommel. Measuring 4" x 6", n.p., n.d. A bust portrait of Rommel in uniform, signed in his typical pencil across bottom of his image and again boldly signed on the blank postcard verso. With a small pencil notation on verso. Faint toning and corner bumping. Light contrast on the front makes the recto signature slightly more difficult to see, but both bold signatures. Very fine condition. Accompanied by a PSA/DNA Letter of Authenticity.

Johannes Erwin Rommel (1891-1944), known as the "Desert Fox", was a German Generalfeldmarschall during the Second World War. In 1937, Hitler appointed Rommel in charge of military training for Hitler Youth. The following year, he became second in command of Hitler's escort battalion that traveled with him outside of Germany. Throughout the war, Rommel served during the invasion of France, the Netherlands, and Belgium, as well as campains in North Africa. He left Africa in March 1943, and Hitler placed him in command of Army Group B in July after the overthrow of Italian dictator Benito Mussolini. In mid-July 1944, an Allied fighter strafed Rommel's car, causing a crash that fractured Rommel's skull. Three days later, German officers, likely with Rommel's support, attempted to assassinate Hitler. When the plot failed, Hitler offered Rommel the opportunity to commit suicide rather than executing the popular war hero. Rommel committed suicide by cyanide capsule in exchange for a promise that his family and staff would not be persecuted. The public story of his death was that he had died of a heart attack or an embolism caused by the strafing attack, and he received a state funeral.
