Check No. 128/L39673, 8.25" X 4.5", drawn from Lloyds Bank Limited, London, completed in manuscript, June 25, 1914, payable to "H. C. Bussey, Esq", in the amount of £77. Endorsed by Bussey on verso.

August 1914, the Endurance made the first crossing of the Antarctic continent, 1800 miles from sea to sea. However, 1915 turned into an unusually icy year in Antarctica and the Endurance became trapped in the ice for nine months. Pressure from the ice ultimately crushed the ship on October 27. Shackleton left his crew and, with only five companions, made a voyage of 800 miles in a 22-foot boat through stormy seas, crossed the unknown interior of South Georgia, and reached a Norwegian whaling station on the north coast. Shackleton then succeeded in rescuing the rest of the Endurance party and bringing them to South America. Amazingly, all members of the Endurance party survived the ordeal.
