Ernest Hemingway, on his way to cover the bullfights in Spain for "Life" magazine, signs an autograph aboard the SS "Independence" - his firsthand reports were published in "Life" magazine and later in his last major literary work, "The Dangerous Summer"

Signature "yours very truly / Ernest Hemingway" in pencil, 5.5" x 3" note paper with serrated edge at left. Written in pencil in another hand beneath signature: "on boat." Fine condition.

Accompanied by an 8.5" x 11" photocopy of a typed itinerary for Mrs. Samuel Katzoff and four named friends for a transatlantic cruise aboard the SS Independence (with subsequent land travel in Spain), leaving New York City on April 25, 1959, and arriving at Algeciras, Spain, May 1, 1959.

Ernest Hemingway had accepted a Life magazine assignment to cover the bullfights in Spain. A 30,000-word extract from the script was published in three consecutive installments in LIFE during September 1960. The Dangerous Summer, published posthumously in 1985,is an edited version of a 75,000-word manuscript Hemingway wrote between October 1959 and May 1960. His last major literary work, it was a firsthand account of the rivalry between two great matadors, Dominguên and his brother-in-law, Antonio Ord"_ez.
