Description:

Hemingway Ernest 1899 - 1961 Ernest Hemingway signed and addressed envelope to Leonard Lyons.

Air mail cream envelope signed by Ernest Hemingway as "E. Hemingway" above "Compagnie Generale Translatlantique, French Line" return address flap verso and addressed to journalist "Leonard Lyons Esq., New York Post, 75 West Street, New York 6, NY, Estados Unidos" in pencil recto entirely in Hemingway's hand. The envelope, which has a rippling tissue like texture, was postmarked from Pamplona, Spain on July 12, 1953 and bears two franked Juan de la Cuerva brown and blue stamps. Overall the envelope is in very good to fine condition, with expected weathering and tears related to letter opening, measuring 5.5" x 6.375".

Ernest Hemingway (1899-1961), an American writer celebrated for his laconic writing style and spare treatment of masculine subjects, received the Nobel Prize for Literature just a year after sending this envelope to New York Post columnist Leonard Lyons. Hemingway's service as an ambulance driver in Italy during World War I, his time in a vibrantly intellectual interwar Paris, and his journalistic coverage of the Spanish Civil War were all incorporated into his fictional works. A year after this envelope was written, Hemingway was seriously injured in two successive airplane crashes and an African brush fire. Chronic pain from these injuries, his heavy drinking, and deep depression culminated in Hemingway's suicide eight years later at the age of sixty-two.

Leonard Lyons (1906-1976) was a popular serial columnist who produced 12,000 mostly arts-related newspaper columns over a forty-year period published in the New York Post under the heading "The Lyon's Den". Leonard knew dozens of actors, musicians, writers, and Hollywood personalities through his work as a journalist.

A beautiful Ernest Hemingway signature postmarked from his adoptive country Spain!
