Description:

Caruso Enrico

Enrico Caruso bold signature

Cream colored card boldly signed by Italian tenor Enrico Caruso (1873-1921) as "Enrico Caruso, 1911" at center. Minor toning not affecting signature at extreme right edge of card mentioned only for accuracy. Evidence of prior mounting verso, on letter written to Caruso by autograph seeker. Otherwise in very good to near fine condition, measuring 4.875" x 3.25".

Ruth Seligman had written the opera star: "To Mr. Caruso, Dear Sir, I am collecting autographs and would very much like to have yours. Hoping that you will not disappoint me, I am yours sincerely, Ruth Seligman." Caruso did not disappoint, sending Ruth his beautiful and delicate signature.

Around the time that he autographed this card, Enrico Caruso was playing the main character of Dick Johnson, or Ramerrez the bandit, in Puccini's La Fanciulla del West, or Girl of the West. Caruso later took on the role of Radames in Aida in November 1911, and, as always, continued making lucrative sound recordings of famous opera selections.

Enrico Caruso began his phenomenal musical career by street singing in his hometown of Naples. The versatile tenor enjoyed early success performing around the world, and had a longtime professional engagement at New York's Metropolitan Opera. Caruso's popularity and fame were secured by numerous recordings. He died of peritonitis at age 48.
