Enormous 1863 Anti-Slavery Philadelphia Political Broadside, Quote from Racist Rival!
Broadside
Half of a remarkable, enormous political broadside for Philadelphia Republican Harry Bumm. Measuring 45.5" x 29", Philadelphia, ca. 1863. The broadside is printed on two joined sheets, and serves as the top half of a huge printed broadside which, when joined, would be nearly five feet tall. With flattened folds. Toning and scattered light to moderate foxing throughout. Some tears and chipping at the edges have been repaired by silking on verso. Additional archival tape on verso at the spine and to reinforce areas of loss and tears. Loss to the second "R" of "Treasurer." Still attractive and a remarkable printed piece.

The broadside is a striking attack on Bumm's rival, Democratic John Brodhead, who is painted as a pro-slavery candidate who holds white labor in contempt. It features a bold heading, "City Treasurer!," accompanied by a large woodcut of a shack and a white family, with an overseer whipping a slave. It also features quotes from an alleged 1860 letter from Brodhead, to then-Senator Jefferson Davis, seeking an appointment as Minister to Nicaragua: "I should like to go to that country and help open it to civilization and Niggers. I could get strong recommendations from the President's present friends in Pennsylvania for the place, were the Mission vacant, and I think I would prove a live Minister. I am tired of being a White Slave at the North, and long for a home in the Sunny South... "

This broadside is a stunning example of the intense partisan passion of Civil War politics in Philadelphia. In 1863, Democrat John Brodhead was running for City Treasurer against Republican Harry (Henry) Bumm. The Republicans harkened back to the policies of the Free Soil Republicans of the 1850s as defenders of free labor.
