On August 6, 1945, the crew of the B-29 Superfortress Bomber Enola Gay dropped an atomic bomb nicknamed "Little Boy" over the southwestern Japanese metropolis of Hiroshima. Colonel Paul Tibbets piloted the 12-man crew. The nuclear bomb wiped out 70 percent of the city and immediately killed 80,000 people; tens of thousands more would later die of radiation exposure.

Paul W. Tibbets was the pilot and commander of the Enola Gay. Known for his decisive leadership and exceptional piloting skills, Tibbets played a crucial role in this historic mission. Tom Ferebee served as the bombardier on the Enola Gay. His precise aim and technical expertise ensured the bomb hit its intended target. Theodore "Dutch" van Kirk was the navigator for the Enola Gay. His navigational accuracy and strategic planning were vital in guiding the bomber to its target over Hiroshima.

Other important players in the mission were Richard H. Nelson, radio operator; George Caron, tail gunner, Morris Jeppson, weapon test officer, and Jacob Beser, radio specialist. In fact, Beser later flew on "Bockscar" over Nagasaki, making him the only person to serve on two atomic bomb strikes.

Together, these men formed a critical team whose actions had profound and far-reaching consequences, shaping the outcome of World War II and the world thereafter.
