Description:

Jeppson Morris

Fine condition signed iconic black and white print, 12" x 8", depicting the complete devastation after the release of "Little Boy" and the bombing of Hiroshima. The atomic bomb carried on board the Enola Gay, was piloted by Colonel Paul Tibbets, with Jeppson Morris as assistant weaponeer. The explosion wiped out 90 percent of the city and immediately killed 80,000 people; tens of thousands more would later die of radiation exposure. This stark black and white print gives one pause while visually canvasing the city shown as a mass of strewn rubble.

The sobering photo was signed, dated and inscribed by Morris Jeppson. Dated "6 Aug. 1945" and signed by him as "Morris Jeppson/Weapon Test Officer/Enola Gay Mission/6 Aug 1945" and includes his penned inscription of:

"In 1945, not much was known about radiation effects of atomic detonations. In time, it was realized that primary radiation of x-rays and gamma rays at the instant of detonation could burn people and start fires. Also fission of the Uranium 235 produced radioactive by-products that could be blown around target regions."

Jeppson's role was to climb into the bomb bay and remove the three green safety plugs from the bomb and to replace them with the three red plugs just before the aircraft climbed to high altitude close the target area. The three safety plugs protected the plane from premature in-flight detonation.

An iconic image of this moment in history, signed and inscribed by an Enola Gay crew member.
