In full:

"Dear Sir

Let me sincerely thank you for sending me your Valedictory Address, which I have read with much pleasure, thus (to my loss) I can feel only a general gladness in the prosperity of so excellent a Society as you presided over.

And let me take this occasion to add my thanks to those of my sister, Miss North, for your father's very kind attention & assistance in her illness.

I hope whenever you visit London, you will let me have the pleasure of becoming personally acquainted with you.

I am, dear Sir, very truly yours,
James Paget

Dr. W. M. Dobie."

The recipient of Paget's letter was quite possibly English physician and surgeon William Murray Dobie (c. 1829-1915), who at the time of this letter, would have been at the correct age for giving a "Valedictory Address."

Sir James Paget, 1st Baronet was an English surgeon and pathologist who is best remembered for first describing Paget's disease and who is considered, together with Rudolf Virchow, as one of the founders of scientific medical pathology. A surgeon of international repute, he served as surgeon extraordinary (1858-1867), sergeant surgeon extraordinary (1867-1877), and sergeant surgeon (1877) to Queen Victoria. He was created a baronet in 1871. Among Paget's works are Lectures on Tumours (1851), Lectures in Surgical Pathology (1863), and Clinical Lectures and Essays (1875).
