Emmett Dalton (1871-1937) was an American outlaw, train robber and member of the Dalton Gang in the American Old West. He was the only surviving member of the gang to survive a shootout at Coffeyville, Kansas and served 14 years in prison for the crime before being pardoned. He later capitalized on his notoriety, both as a writer and as an actor. Dalton sought to keep youths out of prison and to halt the glamorization of villains in Hollywood, using his films to illustrate his wild past as a grim example to modern youth. In 1931, he was diagnosed with diabetes mellitus and by the following year his health began to fail him. Following this letter, Dalton's health continued to deteriorate and he suffered a stroke on July 4, 1937, and passed away a few days later.
