Description:

Emma Lazarus
Florence, Italy among other places, ca. 1879-1885
Emma Lazarus Association, (5) CDVs & Cabinet Card Initialed "E.L."
Photography

A fine photography collection, comprised of four period cartes de visite and a cabinet photo, all associated with the celebrated Jewish American female poet Emma Lazarus (1849-1887) and members of her family. Ca. 1879-1885. Various places including Florence, Italy. Sepia-colored albumen photographs, all mounted on stock cards, of which two are also signed, inscribed, and dated. Three of the five photographs have photographer's studio backstamps from Paris, France and New York City, including those of Georges Penabert (1825-1903) and William Kurtz (1833-1904). Expected wear including toning, isolated edge wear, water stains, scuffs, and tape residue. The cabinet photo measures 4.25" x 6.5" while the largest cartes de visite measure 2.5" x 4.125."

The lot includes:

1.-2. Two cartes de visite depicting Emma Lazarus standing next to an ornate server or fireplace, one showing her wearing a bonnet, fur-trimmed coat, and muff. That one is inscribed on the verso as: "Frank Lyman from his affectionate / sister / Emma / Florence. Dec. 23. '85." This handwriting does not correspond to known examples of Emma's but it does date from the 28-month-long period in which Emma toured England, Holland, France, and Italy with her sister Annie; perhaps this was Annie's inscription and dedication on behalf of Emma. Frank Lazarus (1851-1929) was Emma's younger brother. Printed copyright information including the backstamp, which reads: "G. Penabert / Passage du Havre 36 & 38 / Au Rez-de-Chaussée / Paris." 2.5" x 4.125."

3. A cabinet card of a young woman wearing a crucifix on her choker, inscribed on the verso as "Alice Lazarus / April 1st 1879 / E.L." though not believed to be in Emma's handwriting. This could very well refer to Alice Furman Lazarus (1859-1938), Emma's sister-in-law, who married Frank Lazarus in 1878. Printed copyright information including the backstamp, which reads in part: "W. Kurtz, / Portraits, / Madison Square, (23rd Street.) / New York / Received Highest Awards in / Vienna, Paris & New York…" 4.25" x 6.5."

4.-5. Two cartes de visite depicting the same unidentified woman standing in a wooded landscape. Trimmed to an overall size of 2.5" x 3.75."
